Understanding the Skill System

21 Levels, Limited Points

The Last Caretaker features a 21-level skill progression system. Each level contains 2-8 different blueprints you can unlock using skill points. However, with only approximately 60 skill points available throughout the game, you must carefully choose which blueprints to unlock based on your strategy and playstyle.

Blueprint Categories

🔧 Tools & Infrastructure

Essential early-game blueprints like disassembly tools and power cables. Priority 5 for all playstyles.

⚡ Power Generation

Solar panels (900-4000 Wh), wind turbines, and diesel generators. Critical for sustainable operations.

🎯 Optimization

Efficiency Matrix (+10% efficiency), Voltage Reducer (-80% power cost). High ROI for established bases.

🧬 Lazarus Complex

Incubation chambers and human cultivation systems. Endgame focus requiring substantial power (100+ Wh base).

ROI Analysis Explained

Return on Investment (ROI) measures how quickly a blueprint pays back its skill point and material costs through improved efficiency or resource generation:

Example: Lumilite Solar Panel

  • Cost: 2 skill points + 20 metal + 10 electronics + 8 plastic
  • Benefit: Generates 900 Wh per hour
  • Payback: ~5 hours of operation to recoup costs
  • Long-term value: Provides 21,600 Wh per day, enabling multiple systems

Example: Efficiency Matrix

  • Cost: 3 skill points + rare materials
  • Benefit: +10% efficiency for ALL electricity, water, and fuel
  • Payback: ~4 hours for large installations
  • Scaling value: More valuable with bigger operations (multiplier effect)

Common Skill Path Strategies

🌟 Universal Essentials (Levels 1-3)

Must-unlock: Disassembly Tool → Power Cable → Recycling Machine → Lumilite Solar Panel

These form the foundation for any successful playthrough. Without them, resource gathering and basic power become bottlenecks.

⚡ Power-Focused Path (Levels 4-12)

Priority: Wind Turbine → Battery → Efficiency Matrix → Lumimax Solar Panel

Maximizes energy generation and storage. Critical for players planning heavy Lazarus Complex operations or large bases.

🧬 Lazarus Specialist (Levels 10-21)

Endgame: Incubation Chambers → Power Optimization → Launch Systems

Requires 100 Wh base + 20 Wh per chamber. Plan power infrastructure before unlocking human cultivation.

🛡️ Combat & Defense (Levels 8-18)

Strategy: Defense Turrets → Weapon Upgrades → Automated Systems

Protect your base from night raids and mechanical storms. Requires 30+ Wh per turret plus ammunition resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset my skill points?

No, skill point allocations are permanent in The Last Caretaker. This makes planning crucial before committing to any blueprint. Use this planner to simulate different paths before making decisions in-game.

How many skill points do I get total?

Approximately 60 skill points across all 21 levels. The exact amount can vary slightly based on optional challenges and achievements, but 60 is the standard progression amount.

What if I make a mistake early on?

Early mistakes are recoverable as long as you unlock the essentials (tools, cables, basic power). The most critical decisions come at levels 8-15 when you choose between optimization, combat, or cultivation paths.

Should I unlock the Efficiency Matrix early?

The Efficiency Matrix (Level 8) provides +10% efficiency for all resources. It has a 4-hour payback time for medium installations and becomes extremely valuable for large-scale operations. Highly recommended before heavy Lazarus Complex investment.
